Task Two: Workshop/audition for a dance in a new style solo

 Skills audit

At Suffolk One, we have be lucky enough to study and explore a vast variety of contrasting dance styles. So far at our time at Suffolk One, we have been graded on Contemporary, Jazz and Kathak. Learning these different styles helped me gain an understanding of what dance styles work for me and which ones do not.

Prior to Suffolk One I attended dance lessons which were predominately Hip hop. I was apart of this dance group from the age of 3 up until the age of 10. I feel that due to the fact I have performed in multiple dance shows in the style hip hop, this helped me make my decision between commercial and contemporary as hip hop and commercial are very similar. At the age of 10, I left there to attend PQA which is a preforming arts company that works with the three decalins acting, singing and dancing. We also have lesson about acting for film which I feel is very useful. From being at PQA, I have been lucky enough to get the chance to be in multiple shows which also include two which I have performed in London's Westend. I feel that PQA has really helped me develop my skills throughout the years and helped me become the performer I am today.

Throughout High school, I was always apart of the dance groups. We would learn different dance routines and have a show case at the end of the year showing what we have learnt to ana audience.  As well as attending dance clubs, I studied dance and Performing arts for my GCSE's and ended up getting a 6 for both of those courses which I feel I am very proud of due to the fact that we were in Covid constrictions for all our lesson up until our final term, this was a struggle for all of us as it stopped us from creating work and experimenting as we wished we could.

Overall, I feel that Suffolk One has helped be be creative and imaginative when preforming due to the vast variety we have learnt over our two year.
From taking this course I hope to achieve a career in performing in the future whether is on screen or on stage.

Jazz routine audition solo

Rehearsal/ run through of the dance

Final time/ audition

Reflection of what I learnt in the workshop/ audition.

To begin todays lesson, we started with a high intensity warmup to warm our entire body and get our blood pumping ready to learn the choreography. We did lots of stretching of the hamstrings to increase our flexibility as this workshop included deep leans and floor work which included our legs extending in the air.

The choreography which we performed for our solo audition was a Jazz style dance based on the work of practitioner Bob Fosse. Due to this being the first time I have ever learnt Jazz choreography, I needed to to have complete focus when learning the choreography and make sure that I followed along completely not missing a move.
As you can see, I improved from our first run through of the dance to the audition of the dance as when I first ran through the dance, I was slightly off on went the wrong way when doing the clicks near the end of the dance.

Reflection of skills I displayed effectively.

A physical skill I effetely displayed was alignment through my arms when doing the beginning clicks, makings sure they were extended to full and in a strong position to ensure that the move is shown to full capacity, this also connects to making sure my posture is in line so that our body is straight with straight arms. Another physical skill I feel I effectively displayed was coordination throughout the whole dance but more specifically in the beginning sequence when my hands are going upwards with my feet shuffling backwards this is effective because I have multiple body parts moving simultaneously at the same time.

Reflection of skills I need to improve on.

A skill I feel I need to improve on is flexibility, although I feel I used my flexibility well, I feel that I didn't fully extend my legs when rolling across the floor. Another Skill I feel I need to improve on is my balance, as when turning in the dance, I would often wobble slightly after turning due to that lack of balance
