Task Two: Evaluation of process an performance Bollywood
In my evaluation, I will be discussing my 5 strengths and 5 weaknesses within Bollywood dance from the rehearsal to the final performance.
My strengths
One skill I feel I have improved on is my coordination. Due to Bollywood having a lot of movements which are most of the time going on at the same time means I had to work hard to master this. I had always felt it a slight struggle to simultaneously move two body parts at the same time but because I knew it was such a huge factor in Bollywood dance, I knew that I needed to work hard to help bring our Bollywood performance come to life. I feel the more I worked on this over the course of our rehearsals, the more it helped me when it came to our final performance. When doing our final performance, I could confidently coordinate my movements and making them seamless.
Another skill I feel I have improved on is my confidence within this style. When first finding out we were going to learn a Bollywood dance, I must admit I was nervous as I had never learnt this style before and had little to no knowledge on it. After doing some research on it I began to feel more confident about learning and performing this style. When we started learning the choreography, I instantly enjoyed it which made me feel more confident with this. By the time it came to performing this for our final performance, I felt the most confident I had felt about this style and could not wait to perform this as I felt it capture the true aspects of Bollywood dance.
My directional focus has improved a lot during our rehearsals of Bollywood. I noticed when we first began rehearsals I would just look out towards the audience and not look at the movements I am doing for emphasis for example when doing our scoop, scoop double scoop section I would just look out rather than looking at my arms go around my body to show the focus on my movement. Again, I feel this improved over time and when I began to feel more confident with every movement, my focus would really come through.
Expression is another skill I feel I have improved on. Personally I feel that I portrayed good expressive skills throughout the duration of Bollywood, I feel that they have developed over time to really help accentuate the Bollywood performance. I noticed that majority of the expressions come from the eyes, I feel this is because your eyes can always tell your true feeling before your mouth can. After noticing this, I focused on showing my feelings with just my eyes and no other part of my face to help me connect with the storytelling of Bollywood dance.
A final skill I feel I have improved on is my balance. In our still images at the beginning of the dance, we go from a quick pace transition into a still image. When we first started doing this I struggle to keep balance as I struggled to keep my body still from moving. I worked on the transitions to the still image a lot as I wanted to perfect it to make sure it looked seamless. After going over this multiple times, I finally got it which I am proud of as it helped to create the 'picture' we were trying to create.
My Skills to develop
One skill I feel I need to improve on is timing. I feel that timing has always been something I have struggled with throughout any dance style. I personally feel that when performing choreography, I don't tend to go at the same speed as everyone else as this can sometimes be quite noticeable. To develop this, I will do timing exercises where I learn some choreography and focus mainly on the timing before I focus on anything else to really ensure I am working at the timing of the music.
Another skill I feel I need to improve on is my musicality. My reason for this is because I feel that I am not as fluent as I could be with the music and I feel I don't take time to really listen and feel the music to help myself engage in the musicality more. To improve I will listen to music at all different tempos and freestyle to allow myself to be within the music and not just listening to it.
Posture is another skill I feel I need to improve on. I had noticed that when performing there is times where I am not elongating my body to its full capacity to effectively show off the movement. I notice this in our little group sections, I feel that when sitting on my knees I am not sitting up as much as I could have been. To develop this, I will work on stretching my core and spine to help me extend my movements.
Another skill I feel I could Improve on is strength of movements. I feel that when performing, I don't fully finish a movement and instead, I just tend to throw it away. I feel I do this as I worry I don't have enough time to fully commit to the move so I end up rushing it. To help me improve this I will work on allowing myself t commit to a move by listening to the time I have for a move and making sure that the move lasts the time and not any less.
The final skill I feel I need to develop is my stamina. I feel that particularly in Bollywood dancing, I am out of breath by the end of the dance. I feel that the consistent fast paced movements really accentuate my lack of stamina. I notice that when we run though the dance multiple times my enthusiasm gets lower and lower each time as I go full out on the fist time by the third / fourth time I am lacking in stamina which means my performance will not be as good as previous ones. To help me improve my stamina I will work on cardio vascular exercises which will over time help me increase my stamina.
