Task Two: Workshop/audition for a dance in a new style- stylistic features

What is my chosen dance style?

After discussing with the group we all came to the conclusion to split into two groups with one performing the style of contemporary and the other performing the style of commercial (which I am doing). The reason for me choosing commercial is that I had done a lot of contemporary dances throughout my whole high school experience and hadn't done many commercial dances. I also chose to perform the commercial style due to fact that commercial is a style which I feel is entertaining, not just to watch but perform as well as you can make it really sassy or keep it more PG like hip-hop.

What are the origins of my chosen dance style?

In the 1950's the style of commercial dance was created as a way for dancers to push against the strict constraints of traditional styles for example ballet. Commercial allowed dancers to be free and experiment with moves they have not use before. Commercial mixed all the different styles of street dance, krumping, popping, breakdance, hip hop, ballet and jazz. Commercial was performed to modern music at the time.

Stylistic features

Low centre of gravity

When performing commercial dancing, you need to ensure that you maintain a strong balance which is aligned the centre of gravity to help support balance.

Contrasting dynamics

Commercial is usually based off hip hop which consists of sharp movements. The difference between commercial and hip hop is the contrast between the sharp movements and the fluent seductiveness of jazz.

Unison
Commercial can be performed with as little or as many dancers as you wish. Commercial is usually performed in small groups or large groups. But in every commercial dance there is always unison whether its small sections or throughout the whole dance.

Relationship between dance and music
The close relationship between the dance and music is based on the fact that they are both organised around rhythm, by either emphasising the beat or maintaining the same beat throughout.

Range of styles
Commercial dance usually refers to dances outside of ballet, theatre and highly partner orientated. It refers more to styles which are relevant at the time.
